For over 30 years, Motability has provided disabled customers with a way to enhance their personal independence through specially modified vehicles. The scheme makes use of the government's Mobility Allowance in order to achieve this end, ensuring that cost-effective transport solutions are available to those who need them.
In order to qualify for the scheme, a customer must be receiving one of the following payments, with at least 12 months' award duration remaining:
• The Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of the Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP);
• The Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance (HMRC DLA);
• The War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS); or
• The Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP).
Please note that only the higher rate of the Mobility Allowance is used for the scheme, and that the Attendance Allowance cannot be used.
There is no upper age limit on who can qualify for the scheme, although only one nominated driver under the age of 21 is permitted. Similarly, drivers under the age of 25 will only qualify for vehicles which have a power rating of 115bhp or less, and which fall into the lower ABI insurance groups. Those who have a conviction for a driving offence, or other type of disqualification, may not be eligible for the scheme.
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) website contains full details regarding the Disability Living Allowance and the Personal Independence Payment, while Veterans UK can provide more information about the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement and Armed Forces Independence Payment.
