Ford EcoBoost petrol engines reduce fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions

Environmentally conscious automotive company Ford have borrowed diesel engine technology to develop a petrol engine that lowers CO2 emissions and fuel consumption by up to 20%.

The EcoBoost engine takes favourable characteristics from diesel engines, such as strong low-end torque and good fuel economy, which makes it an attractive alternative to diesel or hybrid power units.

With a fuel economy of 88.3mpg driving an Econetic addition of the Ford Fiesta could save you up to 20% on fuel.

Ford have recently announced the development of a second generation of the EcoBoost engine. The enhanced technology hopes to improve power and deliver around a 5 percent gain in fuel economy over the current EcoBoost engines.

"The first generation of EcoBoost applied some of the key technologies found in powerful diesel engines -- such as direct injection and turbocharging -- and optimized them for the gasoline engine," Bob Fascetti, Ford's director of large gas and diesel engine engineering, said in a statement. "The next generation of EcoBoost engines will continue that path."

In line with the Government's hopes to make green vehicles avaibale to a wider market, Ford will continue to rollout the technology across its line-up. Ford plans to build about 1.5 million EcoBoost engines globally by 2013.
