Ford Mondeo Crowned King!

By WhatCar in December 2011

The Ford Mondeo was crowned King in the December edition of What Car? Magazine. The  recently launched Ford Mondeo was praised for its lower starting price and new look in the review.

In the ‘Fleet and Family Car Face-off’, the new Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCI 163 Zetec and Vauxhall Insignia 2.0 CDTI 160 Ecoflex ES 5dr faced stiff completion from What Car? Family Car of the Year- the Mazda 6.

Ford has recently given the new Mondeo a face lift including subtle restyling on the front end and new rear lights. Although the new Mondeo houses Fords latest 2.0 litre engine under its bonnet, the price has not increased- meaning more bang for your buck. The other competitor for the coveted title was the newly refined Vauxhall Insignia.

Out of the trio of family cars, the Mondeo offered the best ride- a ‘testament to the brilliance of Ford’s engineers’, according to What Car?. Offering excellent stability control, the Mondeo was completely ‘at home running 70mph on the motorway’, offering an interior ‘refresh’ that included better-quality materials, a slimmer console and more boot space.

In comparison the What Car? favourite- the Mazda 6- felt roomy, with lots of legroom and rear folding seats. The new Mazda 6 was enjoyable to drive thanks to balanced handling and well-built engine, although plastic interiors let the car down.

Also competing for the top spot, the Vauxhall Insignia- which What Car? suggest was designed for motorway driving, although the newly revised engine was deemed ‘too clattery’ and space inside was cramped.

After a battle on the racetrack, as well as an inspection under the bonnets, the New Ford Mondeo  took the top spot once again. The Mazda 6 was a fantastic runner-up, slipping to second place and the Vauxhall Insignia left falling behind at number three.
