Why Choose an Electric Vehicle?

Let's talk electric vehicles!

We get asked about electric vehicles a lot. Whether is be for personal use or commercial, there's an electric vehicle for everyone.

At Peoples Ford we are delighted to welcome you to the future of driving through the fantastic range of Hybrid and All-Electric vehicles which are now included in the cutting-edge Ford line-up.

Don't worry, we're here to help you with all things Electric Vehicle and break it down to help you ensure you find the perfect EV fit.

There are currently four types of electric powered engines available in the Ford line-up: Mild Hybrid (MHEV), Hybrid (HEV), Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), and All Electric (BEV).

Here are just a few examples of Ford electric vehicles...

So, what are the differences between the different kinds of Electric Vehicles?

All-Electric (EV)

Plug In. Charge up. Improves efficiency versus a mild hybrid or hybrid engine. Plug-in Hybrids have the two sources of power like a hybrid, but with a larger high voltage battery, enabling you to drive longer distances on all-electric power.

Includes E-Transit, all-new E-Transit Custom and all-new E-Tourneo Custom.

Mild Hybrid (MHEV)

These models cannot drive solely on electric energy. The car is still powered by a conventional engine, but has a small electrical motor which assists it to improve the efficiency of the output. The separate 48V Li-ion battery is automatically recharged by regenerative braking during coasting and braking. There is no requirement to connect the battery to a power source.

Includes Transit Custom, Transit Van, Transit Double Cab, Transit Custom Kombi and Transit Chassis Single Cab.

Electric Vehicle - Mild Hybrid

Hybrid (HEV)

These models are increasingly popular in cities and urban areas. The key identifier with a Hybrid is that they switch between two sources of power, conventional and pure electric. The difference from Mild Hybrid is that the Hybrid has a larger battery and more powerful motor which means the vehicle can run solely on electric power for low speeds and parts of small journeys, making the Hybrid engine a very efficient choice.

Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV)

Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles (PHEV) have all the functionality of full Hybrid technology, with the added advantage that they can be charged from an external electricity supply. The larger capacity of the battery makes them capable of zero-emissions while driving for ranges of up to 30 miles (50 kilometres), with the ability to switch to Hybrid mode to conserve battery life and to petrol or diesel-only for longer journeys.

What affects range?

There are three main factors that can affect the driving range of an Electric Vehicle:

Heavy acceleration and high speeds

- In any type of vehicle, accelerating fast will use more power and reduce range. This applies to Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) and Electric Vehicles (EV).
- Likewise, faster speeds create exponentially more wind and road resistance, impacting on range.

Climate and temperature

- Extreme heat or cold temperatures outside have the potential to affect battery range, directly. All electric vehicles (EV's) have less energy when in cold temperatures compared to warm temperatures due to battery cell chemistry.
- Heating and cooling the inside of the vehicle for passenger comfort also has an impact.

Regenerative braking

- Regenerative braking can capture and reuse more than 90% of the braking energy improving the efficiency of the battery and extending the battery range.

How to improve range

These tips will help keep you comfortable and relaxed about the range of your Electric Vehicle:

- Pre-condition the vehicle. Set the departure time to warm the cabin and the battery while the vehicle is still plugged in. Use the FordPass App or the vehicle's touchscreen.

- If possible, always keep the Electric Vehicle plugged in whenever it is parked. In cold weather, even trickle charging will help the vehicle to keep the temperature of its battery optimised.

- Avoid using high-power, fast charging (DC) after short driving distances. The battery needs time to heat up, under normal driving conditions, to be able to accept high charge power. Not giving your battery time to condition will impact charging performance.

- Ensure tyres are at the correct pressure. Under inflated tyres can affect the rolling road resistance and therefore increase drag, impacting on energy consumption. The wrong pressure will also affect the tyres’ grip on snowy and icy roads. Winter tyres are recommended where necessary.

- Set the climate control to create a comfortable but moderate ambient temperature. It is more efficient to maintain a consistent temperature than it is to keep turning climate control on and off, heating up the cabin before letting it cool down again.

- Rather than use heating and ventilation to warm up the whole cabin, use the heated seats and steering wheel as primary local heat sources for the passengers. These consume far less energy.
