Ford Mondeo Name As Car Of The Year

Ford’s class leading saloon, the Mondeo was named ‘Used Car of the Year’ at the annual What Car? awards this month. According to judges, the model is available on the second-hand market for more than £10,000 less than a new Mondeo.

Judge Steve Fowler, editor-in-chief at What Car? praised the Mondeo for its build quality and driving dynamics. Using a 2.0 litre diesel in Zetec trim as an example, he said, “It’s a comfortable cruiser for covering motorway miles, yet it’s still great fun to drive and makes an extremely capable family car. There’s loads of cabin space, and it’s solid and well put together”.

Nine individual categories were judged and the winners named before the used Ford Mondeo was dubbed overall winner. The cars were rated on factors such as quality, reliability, running costs and driveability. Fowler said of the Mondeo, “It’s hard to find fault with the Ford Mondeo – especially at the price.”

Ford celebrated a double success at the awards, winning the ‘Green Car’ award with its 2008 Focus 1.6 litre diesel. Other winners included the 2005 Porsche Boxster, which was awarded best used sports car, and Vauxhall scooped 3 awards with the Zafira taking the MPV title.

Demand for used cars is increasing due to the variety of offers that can be found within the used car market. New models are being subject to increased VAT, meaning people are looking for cheaper alternatives.
