Emma's trip to The Three Lochs Forest Drive

I’m a big fan of those fresh autumn days when the sun is shining and the sky is clear blue. So it felt great to wake up to a beautiful crisp autumn morning after a long week of heavy rain. I wanted to do something on my day off so we decided to jump in the car and head out on a drive and make the most of the day before the forecasted rain.

It was the perfect day to do the Three Lochs Forest Drive that we had been wanting to do for a little while so off we went. It’s located near Callander and Aberfoyle which isn’t too far from where we live, but when you’re there it feels a million miles away. Surrounded by trees, mountains and water. Absolute bliss.

The Forest Drive is 7 miles long with a 10 mph limit and a one-way system throughout the route. There is a pay and display machine with an entrance fee of between £1 to £3 depending on how long you plan to stay. However, blue badge holders go free.

The Three Lochs Forest Drive takes you past three picturesque lochs - Lochan Reòidhte, Loch Drunkie and Loch Achray. The roads are a mix of tarmac and gravel throughout but on the most part, it is of good quality, though there are some scattered potholes that we were able to avoid.

We took some snacks and hot drinks with us and stopped in the car to enjoy the views along the way. There is plenty of pull in places so it is easy to stop whenever you want to take in the scenery, capture some photos or even enjoy a picnic, which is what I’d like to do in the summer. It was very peaceful when we visited so we loved going at our own pace taking in the breathtaking beauty of each loch and the local wildlife.

Although it was a beautiful day, there was a chill in the air and even though I could have gotten out, I choose to stay cosy in the car. And even though I was sitting in my wheelchair in the back of my Ford Tourneo Connect, I was still able to enjoy the scenery and I didn’t feel like I missed out on anything. So I’d recommend it for other wheelchair users or anyone who may struggle to walk short distances but loves to be immersed in nature. Perfect for these autumn months and the fast approaching winter season.

The Three Lochs Forest Drive is great for a wee day out whether you choose to stay in your car or wander around. It’s also a great place to visit if you are on holiday in the nearby area. Personally, I’ve stayed at Forest Holidays Strathyre in one of the wheelchair accessible cabins which has a hot tub with a hoist. It’s one I’d definitely recommend visiting.
