Road tripping with Emma Muldoon.

We love going on road trips and this month we headed to Northumberland for the weekend. The purpose of the trip was to review the accessibility of two pubs with rooms and explore the area.

It was just after lunch on a Friday when we set off and began the three-hour drive to our first stop of the weekend, the lovely Blyth.

Set on Blyth Harbour, The Commissioners Quay Inn was our base for the night. We managed to park in one of the hotels disabled parking bays before making our way in to check in. After dropping our bags off in our accessible room, we headed down for some much-needed food.

The hotel's restaurant won a good food award in 2019 so we were excited about our meals. Despite being located right on the harbour, we were pleased to see several vegan options on the menu.

For starters, we shared potato skins with the most amazing seasoning. I’m glad we shared the starter because the portion was huge. We were already full afterwards but managed to squeeze in our mains which were a spicy tomato pasta and vegan burger. The award was well-deserved because our meals were delicious.

After dinner, we took a stroll along the harbour since it was a nice night. We then headed back to our room to relax. It was a perfect way to end a lovely evening.

The next morning didn’t go to plan when I suddenly became ill. Reluctantly we decided it was best to head home and postpone the rest of our weekend plans for another time when I was feeling better.

Despite cutting our weekend trip short, we still had a great time and look forward to visiting Northumberland again soon.

The past few weeks have also been full of attending my regular hospital appointments and check-ups with my consultants. I have also been for a wheelchair assessment to discuss my options for a new wheelchair.

The prospect of a new wheelchair is both exciting and nerve-wracking. Exciting because I’ve had my current wheelchair for almost ten years and I need a new one to better suit my complex seating needs. Nerve-wracking because ten years is such a long time that it is part of me.

I’m in my wheelchair from the minute I get up in the morning to the minute I go to bed at night. The thought of changing what I’ve been used to for so long scares me as it will take my body a long time to get used to something new. Overall I’m looking forward to having a new wheelchair that is more comfortable and meets my needs.

We have also been enjoying the lighter nights and took full advantage while dog sitting recently. It was great to discover some new accessible walks and revisit some of our favourite local parks with Toby the dog. Toby enjoys looking out the window while riding shotgun during the car journeys before our walks and then lying down exhausted on the way home after his walk.

It has been a fun month and I’m looking forward to seeing what adventures are in store for next month.
