We are always looking for new places to visit and fun things to do in our spare time or at the weekends. Nine out of ten times our adorable six year old nephew is with us so we usually base our days out around something kid-friendly but also wheelchair accessible for me.
It always feels like an adventure whenever we all jump in my Ford Tourneo Connect WAV because we know we’re in for a great day out especially with my nephew. I love Glasgow so we decided to let my nephew choose what he wanted to do the most. Although we have visited many times, he picked the Riverside Museum. It’s always been one of his favourites.
If you have a disabled blue badge you can park close to the entrance and the paths are flat. Perfect for rolling across in a wheelchair.
Personally, I really enjoy visiting the Riverside Museum. It’s a modern building with great wheelchair accessibility throughout, so it makes moving around and seeing the displays much easier in my wheelchair. It’s free to enter which is also great especially as we like to enjoy a full day out, visiting various places and to end with a nice meal afterwards.
There is so much to see at The Riverside Museum with more than 3,000 objects on display and almost 100 interactive touch screens with lots of information and kid-friendly stories. The displays include everything from old cars, public transport, prams, skateboards, motorbikes and The Tall Ship.
From a wheelchair user’s perspective, there are two displays that I really like. The first being a display showing the progression of wheelchairs throughout the years. The second being a black taxi cab with wheelchair ramps. I think it’s great that they have incorporated disability and accessibility into the Museum’s displays.
We were kept busy during our visit by completing a quiz, which my nephew loved. Before leaving he was happy to receive his prize for completing the quiz. We actually spent much longer in the museum than we expected so by the time we left it was already dark outside.
We had worked up an appetite exploring the entire museum so it was time for dinner. There are so many great restaurants to choose from, but again we let our nephew decide. He picked IKEA. We all love IKEA. Who doesn’t? The veggie balls and biryani are so good.
Can’t beat a trip to IKEA for dinner and a look around the market hall. We go to IKEA so often it feels like our second home. Again, we love it because it is accessible with great disabled parking. There are so many disabled bays, but we always laugh because we end up parking in the exact same parking bay every time we visit. Maybe we are creatures of habit!
It was a simple but fun family day out and those days are my favourite kind of days. I’m looking forward to lots of festive days out in the coming weeks.
