Over close to three decades, the Ford Fiesta has remained the leading car in the UK. In sales figures for 2016 so far, it continues to be number one.
The Fiesta broke the four-million mark for UK sales in 2014. That achievement finally surpassed the iconic Ford Escort, and makes the Fiesta the best-selling vehicle of all time. In the same year, the hatchback became the number one choice for European drivers.
Auto Express revealed that 2015 saw a record high for new car registration. The 2.6 million vehicles registered during the year included more than 133,000 Fiesta cars. That number easily made the model top of the list for the year. This is the seventh consecutive time that the Fiesta has been number one. At the Cologne plant, production of the Fiesta needed to rise by 300 cars per day in order to meet demand across Europe.
Visit a Ford dealership today and you will see the sixth-generation Fiesta in the showroom. Since launch, it has been the front-runner in the small car segment for close to three decades. A new Fiesta is expected to arrive in 2017.
The model range also includes the sporty Fiesta ST, soon to be replaced by the ST-2. It has been just as big a hit, winning 22 international awards in the first 12 months. WhatCar? has already given the ST-2 a 2016 Car of the Year title.
Over the first two months of 2016, the Fiesta has remained the popular choice in new car sales. Auto Express has revealed that combined January and February figures come to 12,860 for the hatchback.
The appeal of the Fiesta to UK customers is clear to see. As well as being a repeated award-winner, the car is practical for families, businesses and individuals. It is a regular Car of the Year and Best Small Car, recognised by many leading motoring industry bodies.
Even though Ford is not a British brand, the Fiesta has gradually become part of the UK's identity and a common sight on roads across the country. Reviewers regularly make note of the Fiesta's interior capacity, efficiency, consistent running and overall value.
The other key to the hatchback's popularity is impressive safety. Euro NCAP awarded the Fiesta a five-star safety rating. It has maintained that exacting level of passenger protection since 2008. The Fiesta was also the car in which the Ford MyKey system launched, and the technology has earned a special Euro NCAP Advance award.
Close to 40 percent of customers choose the Fiesta with Ford's pioneering 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine. The engine is an appealing option in itself, as a four-time International Engine of the Year. It leads on efficiency and reliable performance.
Continue to read the 2016 rankings, and you will see the Ford Focus in fourth place for the year to date. It was third in 2015 and second in 2014. Since the start of 2016, around 7,000 Focus models have been sold in the UK.
Alongside the Fiesta, the Focus is a staple of the Ford car range. It was one of the first models to debut Ford SYNC 2 with Emergency Assistance. The Focus – and the Mondeo – show that Ford is not limiting its advances to any one car.
